Before you go out and buy new aerial, you must first check you can receive digital in your area. Take a look at the aerials on neighbouring properties, this will give you a idea of the the direction the antenna needs to point. It will also give you a idea of aerial size required for good reception. A good tip is to speak to a neighbour and ask if they have any issues receiving freeview. In my local area Norwich you find aerials pointing in different directions. If this is the case where you live you need to find out which transmitter is best. If the aerials are vertically mounted ( prongs up and down ). This type of aerial will be aligned to a relay transmitter. Relay transmitters do not offer the full range of digital channels. As a example relay TV transmitters in Norfolk offer the freeview light service. A freeview light transmitter has not been fully upgraded to digital, and will have limited coverage. Aerials that are horizontally mounted ( prongs left to right ) will be aligned to a main digital transmitter. As a example tacolneston transmitter in Norfolk supplies the full range of digital channels to Norfolk and and parts of Suffolk. Once you attained which which transmitter to point your aerial too, it is time to get the equipment and install it. I will start off by saying please do not attempt to fit the aerial to the chimney unless you have all the necessary safety equipment. For a DIY aerial installation i recommend a loft aerial, why safety reason alone. Although the aerial needs to be of good quality, you can use light duty fixings and brackets. This is something i would not recommend for externally mounted aerials. The times i have seen huge high gain aerials laying on there side. Never use tiny wall brackets and flimsy masts as they will come down in the first gale. I have fitted thousands of aerials and to date never had one blow down. Yet on my travels in and around Norfolk i see many antennas that have come down prematurely. If you are not confident about working at heights you may consider freesat. Freesat dishes can be mounted on a south facing wall, and do not require a trip to the chimney. The freesat service offers the full range of digital TV services but you may require a set top box.

Now that most of the UK has switched from analogue to digital. The uhf frequency that was used for analogue can now be sold to the highest bidders. 3G mobile internet never really took off, as it had limited range and was only available in built up areas like Norwich. This is what makes 4G or fourth generation so valuable. As it uses the top bit of the uhf band 791 to 861 mhz previously occupied by analogue tv. Unfortunately all freeview aerials of wideband type will pick this up with ease. TV aerials closest to 4G mobile masts will be most affected. Loss of the Hd channels located at 801 mhz will be most effected. Amplified tv systems could be affected by 4G interference. Now that Norfolk has switched to digital, high pass filtering is recommended for aerial installations close to 4G transmitters. What can be done, well firstly you need to determine the type of interference causing the freeview to freeze. This could be radio interference which would need a low pass filter. Or it could be police or ambulance radio interference, which would require tetra filtering. And lastly there is co channel interference. This is where your antenna picks up an identical signal from a freeview transmitter out of your area. This cannot be filtered out as you would also filter the channel you want to receive. This situation usually arises when cheap equipment or you antenna is of the wrong type or poorly aligned. For more information please drop me a email.

There is all ways one team that arrives with a late push for promotion. But surely readings late show beats them all. Promotion to the premier league will open up a new revenue streams for pubs, clubs and sports bar in reading. Many pubs have obtained from showing live premier league football due to the high cost. UK satellite subs cost over a grand a month for commercial satellite. Compare this to a European satellite sub of under a grand for the whole year, and you can see why so many reading pubs will use European decoder instead. There will no doubt be a late rush for euro pub football. So if you don’t want to miss the boat get yours installed early. Call Tony on 07799875323

It seem like every gadget you buy these days has some kind of Internet streaming capability. Even in norfolk where a large proportion of of the community are retired, people are joining the internet tv revolution. Broadband speeds are improving and its not just the lucky ones in Norwich. Internet speeds in rural areas have become capable of internet streaming. Televisions now come with iptv as standard, and although the content is limited it is growing steadily. One of the main problems with streaming around the home is wireless systems cannot cope with the amount of data, and wireless has a limited range. We are now installing ip capability to homes for xbox 360, playstation, internet ready tv’s, bt vision and set-top boxes. some of the on demand content for east anglia is. bbc iplayer, itv catch up, 4 on demand or 4od as it called, channel five and you tube, Its also possible to catch up with your friends on your TV, with the likes of facebook, twitter and many other social media sources.

The problems reported are fuzzy picture, but the remote sky eye or sky mouse still works. If you have still got the red light on the sky eye but poor picture quality. It is proberly due too a recent frequency changes from a nearby tv transmitter. to rectify this all you need to do is set the rf out put on the sky box too a different frequency. Then retune the tvs which are fed from the rf 1 and rf 2 outputs on the rear of the sky box. To change the rf output on the sky box you need to access the secret sky installers menu.

1 Press services

2 For old sky boxes select system setup for hd boxes highlight spanner and press select.

3 Press 401 the ok

4 you should now be on installers menu, now go too rf outputs. your defult output setting will be 68. Change this value to to something between 21 and 69 and then (hd boxes) press green button. for (old sky boxes) highlight save and press ok.

5 Now re-tune your tv, and dont forget its only the tvs connected via the rf1 and rf 2 outputs. tvs that are connected by scart or hdmi will be uninfected by this.

An interesting post from Geronimo’s forum about Sat dishes in the UK:

UK must allow satellite dishes

There are many thousands of UK residents who – at least so far – have been forbidden to have satellite dishes because of restrictive covenants on their homes or apartments.

People living in so called ‘conservation areas’ and listed buildings are particularly limited in what they may fix to their homes. Those restrictions may now have been deemed illegal by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

A test case (23883/06) where Swedish tenants were evicted because of their use of a satellite dish has been ruled as a violation of the applicant’s human rights under Article 10 (Freedom of Expression) in that they were not allowed to receive satellite signals. The Court ruling has effectively established that the possession and use of a satellite dish for the purposes of exercising one’s right to freedom of information is a human right.

The case, brought by Swedish tenants, has found in favour of the tenants – who are of Iraqi origin – and who had taken their government to court after being evicted by their landlord after installing a dish. The Court ordered that €13,950 be paid to the tenants as compensation.

Importantly, the ruling shows that even if the applicants were technically in breach of their tenancy, the right to information is superior to the landlord’s right to enforce the contract.

UK Housing Minister Grant Shapps said the decision could drive a ‘coach and horses’ through planning and similar legislation. The decision seems to rule that landlords – which includes local authorities – can no longer ban the use of satellite dishes.

From a personal view i think there should be some legislation in regards to dish size and location. and i will carry on as normal trying to find a ascetically suitable place to mount my satellite dishes.
